It's Nice to Bank with People You Know.

Our History

On September 24, 1939, Carter County Bank released a grand opening announcement that said our policy would be "To offer the public every modern banking service and to assist in every way possible in the growth of this great county."

Carter County Bank opened its doors on September 25, 1939 in the building presently occupied by the Main Office on Elk Avenue in downtown Elizabethton, Tennessee.

The first branch office was established in Roan Mountain, Tennessee in March 1950. Additional branches were opened in Elizabethton including the Broad Street branch in 1965; the Milligan-Pinecrest branch in 1969; the Williamsburg branch in 1974; the Village branch in 1984.

Carter County Bank recently expanded in to the western North Carolina market with our Mountain Community Bank branch located in Linville, NC across from the Shoppes at Tynecastle intersection in 2004. Carolyn Davis, a veteran of the banking industry with more than 25 years in community banking is the branch manager.

"We are very pleased to open the new branch in Avery County," said Jim Holmes, president of Carter County Bank. "All of our employees are in touch with the needs of our community because they have all grown up in and live in this beautiful area. It's wonderful to be able to say that at Mountain Community Bank and Carter County Bank, our decisions are made by people that live and work here. We are very proud to be a community bank. We will strive to offer quality products and services backed by the most modern technology while operating our bank the way banking used to be."

"I invite the public and small business owners in Banner Elk, Linville, Boone, Newland and other Avery County locations to stop by our new branch," said Davis. "We're proud of our branch and of our bank's focus on helping Western Carolina grow."

Customer service is our most important responsibility and it's something that we take seriously. Good customer service is listening to the needs and desires our customers have, and doing everything we can to make sure they are met. Offering everything from competitive rates to the latest in technology to old fashioned customer service, Carter County Bank has had Strong Roots and Branches since 1939.
